What is Lifestyle Medicine?
According to the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, lifestyle medicine is defined as: “The use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic approaches, such as a predominantly whole food, plant-based diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substance use, and other non-drug modalities to treat, and oftentimes, reverse and prevent the lifestyle-related chronic diseases that are all too prevalent.”
Lifestyle medicine empowers individuals to prevent, treat, and even reverse chronic diseases by making informed choices in their daily lives. Grounded in six key pillars, it provides a framework for long-term well-being:
Whole-Food, Plant-Predominant Nutrition – A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds supports optimal health, reduces inflammation, and enhances longevity.
Physical Activity – Movement is medicine! Regular physical activity, whether it’s yoga, Pilates, strength training, or walking, is essential for cardiovascular health, metabolism, and mental well-being.
Restorative Sleep – Quality sleep is the foundation of cognitive function, emotional balance, and immune health. Prioritizing a consistent sleep routine can make a world of difference in overall well-being.
